Vocalist and electro-acoustic performer Majel Connery evokes natural landscapes in her work, using otherworldly choral emanations to give voice to the land and sky. Connery is also vocalist for NYC-based art-rock duo Sky Creature, with baritone guitarist Matt Walsh. Walsh toured for over a decade with post-punk band The Forms, which shared stages with St. Vincent and The National). Their music together elicits comparisons with Suicide and Kate Bush.
This show is a 2-part bill and progresses from ambient sound bath to synthy, proggy madness. Set length: 1-3 hours.
Majel Connery is a vocalist and composer who writes music for nature. The New York Times called her voice “superb,” and her compositions are on tour with Grammy-winning choir Chanticleer. Connery’s work can also be heard on Radiolab, and the podcast’s first digital album “Gonads,” on sex in the natural world. Her most recent work, “Elderflora” (on trees), premiered this past fall at Seattle Symphony as a duo with cellist Felix Fan (Sigur Ros, Sonic Youth, Wilco).
Sky Creature is baritone guitarist Matt Walsh and vocalist Majel Connery. Occupying a space between art music and punk rock, the band elicits comparisons with artists from Kate Bush to Suicide. Walsh toured for over a decade as one half of acclaimed post-punk duo The Forms, sharing the stage with artists ranging from The National to St. Vincent to Hum. Until his recent death, Sky Creature was completing an album with Steve Albini, legendary producer of Nirvana and The Pixies. More on Sky Creature here.
